Contributors for Edition 3 – Heart Diseases

Prof Gundu Rao

Prof Gundu Rao is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Minnesota and also the founder of the South Asian Society on Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis (SASAT) and AayuSmart LLC, an IT-supported web-based health management company. He has actively taken part in major initiatives in implementing policies and conducting studies in the Indian population for Atherosclerosis and heart diseases in association with UNDP and CSIR to name a few. Dr Rahul Patil

Dr Rahul Patil is a practising Cardiologist with expertise in managing and treating Premature Heart Diseases at Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru. He also heads a research team at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research to understand the dynamics of how the trend is changing with premature heart diseases in India. He uses these findings to find patterns, symptoms or biological markers that can help in the management of the condition.


Dr Subramanian Kannan

Dr Subramanian Kannan is a senior Endocrinologist and Diabetologist practising at Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bengaluru. His experience enables him to consult complex cases of Diabetes and associated conditions such as heart diseases, hypertension and obesity. He also works as a part of multidisciplinary teams for comprehensive patient care. He is actively engaged with research teams for clinical research and also in teaching.


Dr Balaji Jaganmohan

Dr Balaji Jaganmohan is a consulting Diabetologist at Apollo Sugar, Bengaluru. He manages and treats diabetics and their associated conditions that affect the heart, eyes and kidneys. He is a staunch believer of storing and analysing patient data for translational research purposes. His team of paramedics follow up on every patient and maintains an inventory of all of his patients with every detail during every follow-up of theirs. He is also very active in organising and participating in public engagement programs to create awareness and camps for preliminary testing through his foundation called the Read Foundation.


Dr Charitha Gangadharan

Dr Charitha is a scientist trained Cell and Molecular Biology during her doctoral work at the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad and post-doctoral work at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru. She is at present associated with Narayana Hrudayalaya as a research scientist focussing on developing in vitro model systems in oral cancer that may provide a bridging platform to extrapolate preclinical data to human conditions. In parallel, she is also involved in a team who are on the lookout for novel biomarkers that have the potential to classify at-risk patients into various categories to prevent type 2 diabetes.


Shivani Prabhu, an intern at SciRio has also contributed to the consolidation of the edition. now, after her Master’s in Human Disease Genetics, she believes that science communication is and should be an integral part of every academician, doctor or any stakeholder pursuing a career on the fundamentals of science.
