About the Client
ITC Life Sciences and Technology Centre (LSTC) is the innovation and research hub of ITC Ltd., a leading Indian conglomerate. LSTC supports multiple divisions such as Agrisciences, Foods, Personal Care, and Packaging through research-driven solutions that feed into business strategy, product development, and regulatory preparedness. Effective scientific communication is central to translating laboratory insights into organization-wide impact.
Challenge
While ITC LSTC's scientific teams possessed strong technical expertise, internal feedback highlighted several areas for improvement in communicating research outcomes effectively.
These included:
Translating complex experimental data into concise technical summaries
Adapting reports for diverse cross-functional stakeholders
Building confidence and proficiency in leveraging AI tools for scientific writing
Ensuring consistent documentation structures and visual standards
Applying evidence-based phrasing in business-oriented summaries
To address these, the client required a hands-on, department-relevant workshop, complete with tools and templates specifically designed to integrate with ITC’s internal workflows.
Approach
A two-day interactive workshop was designed and conducted for junior scientists and early-career researchers across divisions. The content and activities were aligned with ITC’s existing reporting requirements and covered the following:
Strategic writing structures for technical and market research summaries
Principles of stakeholder-oriented language and insight filtering
Structured data visualization practices and formatting standards
Responsible integration of AI and other tools (ChatGPT, Quillbot, Grammarly, Zotero)
Interactive peer review using structured rubrics
Activity-based learning with mock datasets, and visualization critique
Each session included guided lectures, collaborative exercises, and group feedback mechanisms.
Results
Participants rated their improvement across key scientific communication domains. Based on feedback collected through Mentimeter, the average scores for improvement in different skill areas through the workshop were:
Skill Area | Average Rating (/5) |
---|---|
Responsible use of AI tools | 4.3 |
Writing clear summaries | 4.0 |
Translating science to business relevance | 3.9 |
Framing insights for strategic decisions | 3.6 |
Using visuals to support technical storytelling | 3.9 |
The scientific communication workshop conducted for ITC LSTC junior scientists addressed gaps in technical writing, introduced structured documentation practices, and improved participants’ familiarity with citation tools and AI-assisted drafting.
Based on traceable feedback data:
Participants reported strong improvements in summary writing, strategic framing, and responsible tool use
Adoption intent for frameworks like the Summary Structure and Zotero was high
Confidence in applying learnings to real documentation scenarios averaged 3.7/5
The workshop established a foundation for more consistent, effective, and audience-relevant scientific documentation at ITC LSTC. All outcomes were grounded in real participant feedback collected during the program.
